Right now there is a move among educators to change STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) to also include art, making it STEAM. The thought behind the change is that art requires similar skills as STEM. Art takes critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, and attention to detail. In the physical world there is a variety of symmetry, patterns, colors, and textures. Paying attention to these details is a skill required in both science and art. STEM is all about processes. It’s about trial and error. Art is the same way. STEM and art overlap in so many different ways that educators are trying to blend them into one category, STEAM. Education is slowly moving towards STEAM but for now it depends on the educator. On this site STEM and STEAM are used interchangeably because it’s in reference to the same set of skills.
